UK expels Russian diplomat after British envoy accused of spying
A Russian diplomat has recently upgraded his spit after abandoning a British official in Moscow last year, firing a Russian diplomat from Britain.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy said action has been taken after Russia recently expelled a British diplomat in November.
Moscow accused diplomats of providing false information and spies to demand his departure.
The government said the UK “will not intimidate our employees in this way” and that “any further action taken by Russia will be considered an escalation and a response accordingly”.
Andrey Kelin, the British ambassador who has been in the post since 2019, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was told that one of his diplomats was being revoked.
“We are unapologetically protecting our national interests,” Rami said.
“I have a clear message about Russia – if you take action against us, we will respond.”
The Kremlin has not yet made public comments.
Certification is the government’s recognition of diplomat status and gives them a certain degree of immunity based on ranking.
