Premier League Darts: What is the reality of being a professional player?

“Sometimes people at home see you throw darts, that’s all. There are a lot of them.”

Charm, fame and financial rewards – As the sport continues to grow, there has never been a better time to participate in the darts than this.

However, there are a lot of things behind the scenes that can get players to the top of the game.

World No. 1 Luke Humphries knew the sacrifices he made firsthand.

Speaking on the opening night of the 2025 Premier League Darts in Belfast, Humphreys said: “It’s a dream for many people to participate in this game, but it’s really tough.

“You leave on Wednesday and go home on Friday. People are watching you for four hours on Thursday night, but there are a lot of them.

“There are a lot of travel and a lot of sacrifices, but we are all very lucky to do what we do. We are paid so well, so it’s a blessing for all of us. We can’t complain.”

2024 World Champion Humphries, who entered the second year of the Premier League schedule, said he learned a lot about how to start in other competitions from the first year.

“If you’re newbie, you won’t know what will happen or how to deal with things. I think last year will help me,” he said.

“Manage the calendar as much as possible, it’s so stacked. You can’t actually play with everything, it’s almost impossible.

“I keep myself very busy all year round and I will carefully choose the game I miss to make sure I don’t burn myself.”
