US Open becomes first major to give LIV golfers exemption for tournament
The U.S. Open will be the first to offer a ranking-based game exemption to players on the LIV Golf Tour.
The American Golf Association (USGA) said that the top players on the Saudi Arabian-backed Tour without otherwise tax-free will get a spot directly at the U.S. Open.
In addition, the top 10 players in the LIV golf rankings on April 7 will also be exempt from local qualifying and will instead go directly to the last 36-hole qualifying match.
The 2025 U.S. Open will be held from June 12 to 15 at Oakmont Country Club, Pennsylvania.
Scott O’Neil, CEO of Lef Golf, said: “Every golf fan in the world is eager to see the world’s greatest player compete at the biggest stage of golf in the Grand Slam.
“Liv Golf is committed to playing alongside the governing bodies of golf to enhance the sport around the world.”
USGA Chief Champion Officer John Bodenhamer added: “In line with our historical approach, we are constantly evaluating the level of talent in career travel and amateur activities, which has led us to add new exemption categories.”
To date, no other professional has offered direct exemptions related to the LIV Golf Points System.
