Africans struggle with interethnic trust but embrace coexistence, new Afrobarometer Pan-Africa Profile shows

According to data from 33 African countries surveyed in 2021/2023, new reports show that most citizens do not oppose people who live next door with people from different racial backgrounds and open their ethnic marriage in their families. However, many people from other ethnic groups, as well as other religion and other religion and other religions and outsiders, have a low level of trust.
The report also shows that Africans may give priority to their national identity rather than ethnic or loyalty. Only ethnic minorities put their racial identity first. However, more and more citizens have reported that their government treats members of their ethnic groups unfairly.
Critical discovery
- Among the 33 countries surveyed in 2021/2023, on average, one -tenth African (21 %) said that they trust other races “a lot”, while 36 % of them “some” trust They (Figure 1).
- However, nine of the nine -tenths of citizens do not oppose people (90 %) from people from different racial backgrounds (90 %) living next door (Figure 2), and open their ethnic marriage in their families (89 %) (89 %) (89 %) ( Figure 3).
- One -tenth of Africans (41 %) of one -quarter people are more connected with national identity, and only 14 % of people prefer races to national identity rather than their national identity; the remaining 45 % also connect to The two (Figure 4).
- Most (92 %) of the Mauritanians believe that it is mainly related to its national identity, followed by 79 % of Guinea, and the Congo-Brazzaville is 69 %. Most of the positions in eight countries.
- In 11 countries/regions, most people also belong to the two identities led by Liberia (71 %), Ghana (67 %), Uganda (67 %) and Bazwana (65 %).
- The main loyalty to express the racial identity of a person is a minority position in all countries. One -third of the respondents reached about a quarter of the respondents: Nigeria (27 %), South Africa (26 %) And Ethiopia (24 %).
- Since the fifth round (2011/2013), in the survey of 25 countries, the same period of people related to their national identity has decreased by 12 %, while those who also agree with two identities have increased by 8 points. Although it is still the status of a minority group, the preference for racial identity has also increased moderately (Figure 5).
- One -tenth of Africans (41 %) reported that members of their ethnic groups are sometimes “frequent” or “always”, because their races are unfairly treated by the government. In 25 countries, since 2016/2018, the views on racial discrimination have increased by 8 percentage points (Figure 6).
African Sagittarius Survey
AFROBAROMETER is a pan -non -party investigation and research network that provides reliable data on African experience and evaluating democracy, governance and quality of life. Since 1999, nine surveys of up to 42 countries have been completed. The 9th round of surveys (2021/2023) covers 39 countries.
AFROBAROMETER’s national partners conducted face-to-face interviews with the language selected by the respondents. The interview produced the result of the national level with error rate is +/- 2 to +/- 3 percentage points, with a confidence level of 95 %.
