Madison Keys wins Australian Open the ‘hard way’ to claim first Grand Slam title
Keys’ success is even more impressive considering the injury-plagued 2024 class.
The 29-year-old missed the Australian Open last year with a shoulder injury and then suffered a hamstring problem that ended her Wimbledon campaign in the fourth round.
Determined to continue competing, Keys decided to make a change at the suggestion of her coach and now husband Bjorn Fratangelo.
Fratangelo convinced her to swap her Wilson racquet for a Japanese brand, Yonex – a swap he thought would reduce her injuries.
“I don’t know why I like this racquet, what it does, all the little details about it. I just know that when I pick it up, it feels really good and that’s a winner,” Case told Bounces on Tuesday., external
Just before the two were married in November, Fratangelo dragged a “kicking and screaming” Keyes to rework her motion for services.
“If you’re going to tear things apart, you might as well tear everything apart, right?” she said.
