GAA: New ’12th man’ rule is ‘killing the game’ – Derry boss Paddy Tally
Asked about goalkeeper dominance, Tyrone boss Malachy O’Rourke said: “There are a few ways to look at it.”
“It’s always there, the goalie can always come out. Last year it was 15 versus 14, so it’s the exact same thing, just there’s less numbers there,” said O’Rourke, who is focused on his duties with Tyrone.
“I do think that if you start reducing the goalie too much, you’re going to lose the goalkeeper. Obviously, I was part of the committee that made the rules and we just felt that the goalie was in his own defense and giving the ball away too much, That resulted in a lot of possession games and a team that couldn’t really push.
“Although at least when he meets the halfway line he’s in a more advanced position and it’s an opportunity to attack but there’s a lot of risk. You saw it today if the ball collapses you have to get back.
“From our perspective, we’re just there to be there for that minute and do the best we can.”
