Joey Barton kicked wife in head in row, court hears
Former footballer Joey Barton pushed his wife to the floor before kicking her in the head during a drunken row at their family home, a court heard.
In June 2021, the former Manchester City and QPR midfielder, 42, was accused of assaulting Georgia Barton, 38.
Westminster Magistrates’ Court was told the argument between the couple began after Barton threatened to fight his wife’s brother and father before they started drinking with two other couples.
Mr Barton, of Widnes, Cheshire, denies assault by beating.
Prosecutor Helena Duong told the court there had been a “verbal disagreement” before Mr Barton grabbed her, pushed her to the ground and kicked her in the head.
The trial heard that when the friend tried to intervene, Mr Barton “threw him off” and said “don’t disrespect me”.
Jurors were told Mrs Barton called police shortly after 23:00 BST “to report she had been assaulted by her husband”.
The 999 call was played in court and a sobbing Mrs Barton told the call her husband “just hit me in the house”: “He was in the house and I was outside.”
Asked if something similar had happened before, she said: “No, this is the first time,” adding that she was hit “in the face.”
Jurors were told that when police arrived at about 23:30, Mrs Barton told them: “I was pushed down and kicked.
“He said he was going to fight my brother and my father.”
