Britain and the EU have changed
Since 2008, the United States has required visitors who do not require a visa to pre-register and screen for a travel authorization (ESTA) before traveling. The UK’s version of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) starts in January 2025. including feesincreasing travel costs.
The EU’s Entry and Exit System (EES) registers all travelers entering Europe. Its new Electronic Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will start in 2025 and be linked to travelers’ passports.
Thirty EU countries, including Spain, ItalyFrance will require incoming visa travelers to have a travel authorization from ETIA. These include travelers from 60 non-EU visa countries, including Canada and the United States, who plan to visit any of 30 European countries within 90 days.
Although most applications for ETIA are processed immediately online, travelers should plan for a delay of up to 30 days and apply for an ETIA at least one month before traveling to the EU.

- USA: Travelers from participating mass countries can travel to the United States for up to 90 days if they have an electronic passport or “e-passport” valid at least six months ago, complete the ESTA application online and pay a $21 processing fee and a $17 authorization fee.
- U.K: The new 2025 ETA changes cost £10 (about $12 or $13) per application and allow business or holiday travelers without a visa to stay in the UK for up to six months.
- European Union: When Etias changes begin, travelers will pay a fee of 7 euros (about $7), and Etias allows them to travel for up to 90 days.
