Sainsbury’s to cut 3,000 jobs by closing cafés and counters

Sainsbury’s has announced it will cut 3,000 jobs and close its remaining cafes as well as pastry shops and pizza counters.

The supermarket said the move would “simplify the business”, adding that “most of Sainsbury’s’ most loyal shoppers do not frequent cafes”.

Sainsbury’s also said it “expects a 20% reduction in senior management roles over the coming months”.

Chief executive Simon Roberts said the company was facing a “particularly challenging cost environment”.

Roberts said the chain had to make “tough choices” as it set out a plan to cut costs by £1bn.

It will close its remaining 61 cafes, as well as pizza and pastry shops, and will also remove hot food counters.

Instead, it will create “the most popular items on the aisle.”

Two weeks ago, Sainsbury’s said it would increase average hourly wages by 5% to £12.60. But wage increases will be delivered in two stages “to help cope with a particularly severe cost inflation environment”.
