Prosiect Cymru: Why are the English FA voting on plans to change Welsh football?
To put it bluntly, it’s all about money. FAW said the new cup, which will replace the existing Welsh League Cup, will generate £3 million per season with the aim of investing it in grassroots infrastructure projects, women’s football and domestic competitions.
But in the long term, EFL clubs will also perform better in Europe than Cymru Premier clubs have done in recent years, with the exception of this season’s new Saints.
Better results increase the coefficient (country ranking), which helps earn more money from UEFA for the association to hand out.
For EFL clubs, they have the opportunity to play in Europe and reap the financial and commercial benefits from it.
