4 San Antonio police officers shot, wounded by barricaded suspect, officials say
A trapped suspect shot and wounded four police officers responding to a call to a residence in San Antonio, Texas, on Wednesday night, officials said.
The shooting occurred at an apartment complex in the Stone Oak neighborhood of north San Antonio.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told reporters that the incident occurred after officers received a call from the suspect’s family that a “suicide was in progress.”
The first officer was “shot in the lower body” when he arrived at the scene, McManus said.
“Another officer who arrived after him, or around the same time as him, was also shot,” the police chief added. “A third officer who arrived at the scene was also shot. Finally, a fourth officer who arrived at the scene was shot The officer was also shot, I believe in the upper torso.”
McManus said four officers were taken to the hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
As of late Wednesday night, the suspect, described as a man in his 40s, remained trapped inside an apartment. Some surrounding units have been evacuated. The exact circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear. McManus did not say whether officers returned fire.
“Right now, a SWAT team is being assembled to try to get this guy out. Once they have a plan in place, we’ll see how that goes,” McManus said.
The chief revealed that all four injured officers had between four and eight years of experience with the department.
