Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian, Force Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan, said during an inspection of the restoration work on the Torit River: “Adverse weather often affects the condition of roads, which are essential for connecting communities and providing humanitarian services. Aid and basic services are vital.” – Lafont Road.

During his visit to Eastern Equatoria State, he came into contact with Bangladeshi peacekeeping engineers who are working on road rehabilitation in collaboration with the state’s Ministry of Transport and Bridges. He also met with local authorities and humanitarian partners to learn how UNMISS can assist efforts to build peace and progress in the region.

“We source marram raw materials from the project site about eight to nine kilometers away. We aim to complete the work on time and to achieve a standard height of 35 to 50 centimeters to ensure a strong drainage system.” State Ministry of Transport and Bridges site Engineer Ali Lochoto explains.

This commitment to high standards is critical because the 98 kilometers of dilapidated road connecting Torit and Lafont severely limits humanitarian access and hinders government operations in several nearby villages.

The economic significance of this work is significant because Lafon County and adjacent areas are important suppliers of fish and produce to the Torit market. In addition, improved road conditions will improve tourism prospects, especially in the Burgillo and Bandingelo National Wildlife Parks.

“Support from the local community is strong and residents of Lafon, Lopit, Bull and Torit are committed to road maintenance. We are providing local materials for the project wherever possible.” Chairman of the Physical Infrastructure Committee of the Eastern Equatoria State Legislative Assembly said Ikikila Angelina Quintino.

The United Nations peacekeeping mission focuses on maintaining roads in South Sudan and improving community mobility. This supports its mission to protect civilians and highlights the critical impact of infrastructure development on peacekeeping.
