light

What kind of lighting do you want? We’d much rather see long-lasting LEDs (the standard for home security today) and wider panels or bright spotlights with well over 1,000 combined lumens to really brighten up an area. Some people may prefer more direct light in particularly dark corners or doorways. We also like having lots of control over brightness, light scheduling, and color, which is a big reason why the Lorex Floodlight Camera tops our list.

cost

Security cameras with large, bright lights tend to be much more expensive than regular cameras. The best models tend to cost over $200, but we look for cost-saving options wherever possible. Ultimately, we decided it wasn’t worth sacrificing quality for the price: No matter how much money you save, having a dimmer light panel after a year of use just feels bad.

camera quality

Where possible, lighting is perfectly paired with high-quality camera resolution and a field of view of over 130 degrees. You’ll notice that many of our options offer 2K resolution, which is great for capturing more detail when the camera is positioned high over a large area, which is often the case with cameras with lighting.

strength

Consider whether you want a battery-powered camera or a wired option. When it comes to spotlight or floodlight cameras, wired versions are common. Battery options may be more versatile, but bright lights can drain batteries quickly, and floodlight cameras are often placed in areas where retrieving the battery to recharge is difficult.

Object detection

You don’t want the lights to turn on every time the leaves blow over. Object detection that can ignore cars and animals and focus on people is a huge asset for a lighted camera. We’d rather see free object detection, but it usually comes with a subscription fee (as well as cloud video storage). Consider whether you want to pay the ongoing costs of your camera.

audio function

If the light catches something unexpected, it would be nice to have an audio option so you can have a conversation or at least use your best shouting voice. This is coupled with a high-quality app that’s easy to understand and use, allowing you to access microphone functionality in seconds when necessary.
