Australian Open 2025 results: Jannik Sinner thrashes Alex de Minaur after Ben Shelton beats Lorenzo Sonego
Australian fans arriving at Rod Laver Arena were eager for De Minaur to be a possible shock – especially given the uncertainty surrounding Sinner’s condition.
De Minaur has struggled against his opponents, losing all nine of his previous matches and winning just one set.
The 25-year-old hopes to end the unpopular streak and become the first local player to reach the men’s singles semi-finals since 2005.
But the raucous atmosphere expected in a night game never materialized.
Sinner’s confident performance proved the extent to which he silenced most of the 15,000 fans.
Sinner’s hitting was sweet and consistent, and he outlasted De Minaur in rallies.
Breaking serve six times and saving just one chance for De Minaur in the second set, he proved his dominance.
“I felt everything was good today. When you break early in every set, it makes things easier,” Sinner added.
During the fourth-round win over Rune, a pale Sinner was visibly shaking in his chair and was forced to take a 20-minute break when the net broke.
After the win over De Minaur, he said he had “a very easy day” on Tuesday and only played “half an hour or 40 minutes” with his coach to keep up the pace.
“I felt ready today,” Sinner added.
“When you play at night, you try to sleep a little longer and eat healthy.”
