Australian Open 2025: Double bounce in Iga Swiatek’s win over Emma Navarro reignites debate about video technology
An apparent doubles match between Iga Swiatek and Emma Navarro in the Australian Open quarter-finals has reignited debate about how tennis uses video technology.
Navarro dropped a point as he trailed A-40 6-1 2-2, although the ball bounced twice in front of the outstretched Swiatek, who keep winning 6-1 6-2.
The eighth-seeded U.S. did not immediately stop scoring and was unable to challenge the call as Navarro continued to play.
The Australian Open introduced a video review system for the first time this year, but it can only be used at the end of a match or when a player has stopped playing.
Navarro said afterwards that the incident had not “caused a swing in momentum,” but still believed changes should be made to the system.
“I think we should be able to see it later,” Navarro said.
“It happens so fast. In your mind you think, ‘OK, maybe I can still win this point even if it doesn’t get called’.
“If I stopped that and it turned out it wasn’t a double bounce, that would be a frustrating thing.
“It’s too hard.”
Five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek said she was “not sure” if it was a double bounce after someone suggested she should admit it.
“It’s hard to tell because I was sprinting full force. I don’t even remember seeing the point of contact,” said the Polish second seed.
“I don’t know. Sometimes you hit the ball without really looking.
“I think it’s just like the referee’s job. I was also waiting for VAR but I didn’t see it so I just carried on.”
