2028 Olympics: IBA asks President Trump to ‘look into’ boxing’s omission from LA Games
The International Boxing Association has asked US President Donald Trump’s new administration to “investigate” the sport’s absence from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended the IBA, which oversees boxing at the Olympics, in 2019 due to concerns over its finances, governance, ethics, officiating and officiating.
The IBA was stripped of its mandate after failing to meet reform requirements set by the International Olympic Committee – a decision upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) in April 2024 After appeal.
The IOC, which has organized boxing events in Tokyo in 2020 and Paris in 2024, has said it will not do so at future Olympics but still hopes to reinstate boxing into the program through new international federations.
Boxing has not yet been included in the 2028 plans, but a final decision has not yet been made on its inclusion.
World Boxing Association hopes to gain recognition to host Olympic boxing competition, The number of members has reached 60.
But the Russian-led International Boxing Association, hoping to reassert its governance role, has asked Trump, who took office for a second time as U.S. president on Monday, to help revive the boxing program.
“They (the International Olympic Committee) have announced within the past 12 months that boxing will not be part of the LA28 Olympic program; we would be grateful if your team would monitor the situation.” IBA letter to Trump read arrive.
“We sincerely hope that boxing can be part of the 2028 Olympic celebrations in Los Angeles and indeed be a great showcase for the true love that the American people and fans around the world have for the sport.”
Trump, who briefly dabbled in boxing promotions in the early 1990s, has been elected to a four-year term and will take office in 2028 when the Los Angeles Olympics are held.
