Togo Considering Becoming a Member of the Alliance of Sahel States – Africa.com
Foreign Affairs Minister Robert Ducey said Togo is exploring the possibility of joining the Association of States in the Sahel (AES). Ducey stressed that the decision rested with Togo’s president, but suggested public sentiment could support the move. Joining the AES would bring strategic benefits, allowing landlocked members Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso to access the sea through the Togo coastline and the port of Lomé, boosting regional trade. Such an arrangement would benefit Togo as it would become a commercial hub. The AES was formed by the military-led countries after they withdrew from ECOWAS, citing alleged manipulation by their former colonial power, France.
