Scotland women: Mick McArdle appointed interim head coach for Nations League openers

Michael McArdle has been appointed interim head coach of the Scotland women’s national team while the Scottish Football Association continues its search for a permanent successor to Pedro Martinez Lothar.

The Spaniard resigned from his post last month Failed to qualify for Euro 2025As well as missing out on the 2023 World Cup, McArdle will now oversee Scotland’s Nations League opener next month.

Former Ayr United assistant McArdle, who is head of women’s elite football at the SFA, will take charge of the national team’s return to action after failing to qualify for a major tournament for the third time in a row. They play away against Austria on Sunday and then host the World Cup. Four days later the Netherlands entered the First Division.

As part of his current role, McArdle has been head coach of the under-19 and under-17 international youth teams, responsible for identifying and developing talent and creating pathways into the national team.
