BRICS Bloc Welcomes Nigeria as New Partner Country – Africa.com
Nigeria has officially joined the BRICS group as a “partner country”, and the ranks of emerging economies have further grown. BRICS was originally formed in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India and China as an emerging market alternative to the Group of Seven (G7) forum. In 2010, its scope was expanded to include South Africa. The organization has attracted increasing global attention over the years, with Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates joining it in 2024. Nigeria is one of the countries interested in becoming a member of the BRICS. Although it has not yet achieved this status, it is the EU’s ninth partner country, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan. Nigeria shares common interests with the BRICS, and its membership reflects its status as Africa’s largest economy.
