Trump promises blizzard of executive orders on first day of presidency

Hours before he was sworn in, Donald Trump promised to sign a series of executive orders on his first day as president while celebrating a victory rally.

Trump spoke to thousands of supporters in Washington, D.C., on the eve of his inauguration, looking ahead to the next four years and celebrating his electoral victory over Democrats.

The Republican has pledged to take unilateral action on a wide range of issues, using his new presidential powers to launch evictions and slash environmental regulations.

“I will act with historic speed and force to address every crisis our country faces,” he promised the crowd.

“You’ll have fun watching TV tomorrow,” he told those attending the Make America Great Again Victory Rally. “Every one of the Biden administration’s radical and foolish executive orders will be rescinded within hours of my being sworn in.”

Trump promised to issue executive orders to strengthen artificial intelligence, create the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), provide records related to the former president’s assassination, direct the military to build the Iron Dome missile defense system, and eliminate the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) ) policy from the military.

Media reports said Trump may issue more than 200 executive actions on Monday, which are different from executive orders.

Executive orders are recognized by the courts, are legally binding, and are published in the Federal Register. They could be overturned by a future president.

However, administrative actions have less impact and are not subject to legal scrutiny. Political writer Tom Meuse wrote that they are more of a “wish list” of policies the president hopes to achieve.

“You’re going to see executive orders that you’re going to be very happy about,” he told the crowd. “We have to get our country on the right path.”

Many of these executive orders are expected to be challenged in court.

Trump also promised to sign executive actions to address illegal immigration at the border by launching what he claims is the largest deportation campaign in history.

Experts say Trump’s pledge to deport millions of immigrants will come under intense pressure logistical hurdlesand could cost tens or hundreds of billions of dollars.

Trump also promised to take action on crime in American cities, eliminate left-leaning government policies and allow transgender people to compete in American sports.

In his rally speech, he credited TikTok’s recovery after a brief ban over the weekend as well as the Middle East ceasefire.

The ceasefire was agreed days ago under the Biden administration.

The rally was held at Capital One Stadium in downtown Washington, D.C., which seats about 20,000 people.

The conference kicked off with a performance by Kid Rock and included remarks from TV personality Megyn Kelly, actor Jon Voight and senior Trump adviser Stephen Miller.

Elon Musk also gave a brief speech after Trump promoted his creation of DOGE. DOGE is an advisory agency known as the Department of Government Effectiveness, which Musk will co-run with Vivek Ramaswamy.

Trump was joined on stage by members of his family, including Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and Lara Trump.

Despite frigid temperatures and snow on Sunday, Trump supporters – wearing red “Make America Great Again” hats and other pro-Trump attire – flocked to the nation’s capital this weekend.

Adverse weather conditions led to a change of location for the inauguration, which resulted in reduced public events and reduced attendance.

Trump will be sworn in Monday morning in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.
