Innovators and Independent Publishers Making African Literature Available and Affordable – Africa.com
African literature is booming and gaining global recognition. In 2021, it won important awards such as the Nobel Prize, Booker Prize, and Camões Prize. It is known as the “Year of African Literature” and is a milestone. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s much-anticipated first novel in a decade also stars Mubanga Kalimamukwento and Damirare Rising stars such as Damilare Kuku. However, challenges remain across the continent. A limited publishing industry, expensive book imports, and underfunded libraries made access to classics and new works difficult. In Ethiopia, despite scarce resources, readers like Dawit Behanu are innovating through online book clubs. Addressing these barriers is critical to sustaining the African literary renaissance and empowering future voices.
