Vice President Kamala Harris Doug Emhoff and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff will return to California after the inauguration, a senior administration official confirmed Sunday.

The official said Harris would need time to decide her next steps. According to multiple sources, she is expected to write books about her time in politics and her interest in food and cooking.

There has been discussion among her allies about a possible run for California’s open gubernatorial seat in 2026. Harris has not yet said whether she will run.

Emhoff, the first person to serve as second gentleman, will leave Washington to return to a legal career, sources told CBS News on Sunday.

Doug Emhoff was a litigator and entertainment specialist in DLA Piper’s Los Angeles office, but he severed ties with the firm four years ago when his wife took the job. Now, sources tell CBS News that Emhoff will return to law, but at a different firm. The source declined to identify the company but said Emhoff is expected to split his time between the company’s offices in New York and Los Angeles.

A source familiar with Harris and Emhoff’s plans said they had been looking for apartments in Manhattan. The couple has a home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles that will serve as their primary residence. The community is not far from the recent wildfires that devastated parts of Los Angeles

Emhoff has kept a low profile since Harris lost her bid for president last November. Last week, he took to social media to express his gratitude for the time he spent with Harris in Washington: “I never thought this kid growing up in New Jersey would one day be in the White House. It’s incredible. Honored to serve as our nation’s first second gentleman,” he wrote.

While in Washington, Emhoff continued to stay connected to his legal career, serving as a Distinguished Practice Visitor at Georgetown Law School. The school said his teaching will draw on his “deep expertise in media and entertainment matters to deliver relevant courses”. These include teaching a course on “Entertainment Law Disputes” and helping run entertainment and media law initiatives.
