Australian Open 2025: Jannik Sinner beats Holger Rune to reach quarter-finals

After two tough service games in the third set, Sinner’s physical problems became apparent and he asked his coach for help after saving a break point to lead 3-2.

He received treatment off the court and returned just over 11 minutes later, but Rooney’s poor performance allowed Sinner to break serve for a 5-3 lead.

The 13th seed required a medical timeout with an apparent knee injury, then Sinner ended the set with a love save.

Play was paused for another 21 minutes at the start of the fourth quarter, and when the two men returned to the locker room, the center pin of the net came loose.

The break seemed to be in Sinner’s favour, as he stormed all the way to a 5-2 lead and served for the win after 3 hours and 13 minutes.

“It’s very tough. I know he has a long game ahead of him, so I’m trying to keep my spirits up,” Sinner added.

“The support today means a lot to me and I really need you today. It’s 90% yours and 10% I’m trying to make you happy.”

Sinner is on a 17-match winning streak, with his last loss coming against Carlos Alcaraz in the Beijing Open final in October.

Unseeded Sonego defeated 19-year-old Thien in four sets and is on course to reach the all-Italian semifinals.

Tenn is bidding to become the youngest player to reach the quarter-finals in Melbourne since 17-year-old Goran Ivanisevic in 1989, but has struggled with injury due to a strapped right thigh.

“Today was so difficult and I’m sad he had problems. It wasn’t the right way to win, but I’m happy to be in the quarterfinals,” said 29-year-old Sonego.
