‘Moments like this win titles’ – Liverpool are ‘level above their rivals’

Liverpool stormed out of the blocks to become title contenders in August, but their momentum has shown signs of slowing in recent weeks.

Slott’s side have conceded one and drawn nine points from their first 18 games, but dropped four points in their two games before facing Brentford.

After 90 minutes at Liverpool, it seemed like two more people went begging. However, they showed the spirit and resilience to get the job done.

Later in the day, Arsenal squandered a two-goal lead in eight dramatic second-half minutes against Aston Villa and failed to maintain pace.

Former Gunner Paul Merson told Sky Sports: “Liverpool scored two goals in stoppage time and Arsenal did the same, which is a huge change and if Liverpool didn’t win the league now, I would Shocked.”

Liverpool’s late win might just prove the catalyst Slott needs to hit the big time in his first season at the club.

Gary Neville told Sky Sports: “A huge day in the title race and even more rocking for Liverpool – there are definitely some frustrated faces among the Arsenal fans.”

Arsenal were taking off as the game reached the 55th minute and Kai Havertz turned around to celebrate his second against Villa after Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring.

But Villa equalized just 13 minutes later with help from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins.

The Gunners rallied and thought they had sealed victory when Mikel Merino’s shot went past Havertz with just three minutes to go, but after the VAR checked whether If there is a handball, the goal will be invalid.

Arsenal have dropped 12 points at the top of the Premier League this season, their highest points tally in a single season since 2019-20 (21 points).

“We were unbelievable. We were proud of the way we played, how dominant we were, how fluid we were and how much we put in,” head coach Mikel Arteta told BBC Sport.

“We played three games in six days. Proud of them but disappointed at the same time. We deserved more. We didn’t get it and we’re sad for that.

“There were moments where obviously they (Liverpool) managed to do that (win). They brought in substitutes and the substitutes made an impact and changed the game.

“On our side it was the opposite, even after conceding two goals very close. The danger is that I know half the team could go off the rails because we ran out of energy.”

Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest have also been mentioned as potential title rivals for Liverpool in recent weeks.

But the Magpies’ 4-1 home defeat to Bournemouth earlier on Saturday left them fourth and 12 points behind, while third-placed Nottingham Forest host bottom Southampton on Sunday. 9 points.
