washington — The incoming Trump administration is planning to step up action Arresting unauthorized immigrants Policies targeting “sanctuary” jurisdictions that restrict cooperation with federal immigration officials will be implemented in major U.S. cities next week following President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, two sources familiar with the plan told CBS News.

One of the sources said areas where U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportation teams are expected to target include areas with large immigrant populations, such as the Chicago area.

The incoming White House “border czar” was asked in a Fox News interview about possible ICE operations in Chicago next week (the plans were first reported by the Wall Street Journal) Tom Homan “There will be a massive raid across the country,” he said.

The incoming administration is expected to quickly repeal Biden administration rules that limited who ICE agents should prioritize for arrest and deportation, leaving most people in the U.S. illegally detained and deported. Biden-era rules generally limit ICE enforcement to serious criminals, recent border crossers and national security threats, largely shielding long-term undocumented immigrants with no criminal records from deportation.

Hohmann also promised Reinstate mass immigration arrests at workplaces that employ workers living in the country illegally, a practice that was ended by the Biden administration.

While Homan said the incoming administration will still prioritize arresting unauthorized immigrants with criminal records, he stressed that no illegal immigrants in the country will be immune from immigration enforcement. Homan said if ICE agents discover illegal immigrants who are not criminals during an operation, they may be arrested in what is known as a “collateral arrest.”
