Australian Open 2025 results: Learner Tien and Gael Monfils defy generation gaps to reach fourth round
Tenn is the first 19-year-old American player to reach the fourth round at the Australian Open since 14-time Grand Slam winner Pete Sampras in 1990.
He was one of three teenagers to impress in Melbourne beating top 10 players.
18-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca defeated Russia’s Andrei Rublev in the first round, while Czech Republic’s 19-year-old Jakub Mencik knocked out Norway’s Ka in the second round Spa Rudd.
Although Fonseca and Mencic both fell, Tiann had already arranged a meeting with Italian player Lorenzo Sonego in advance.
“Obviously, it feels great,” Tian said.
“It was more than I expected and what I hoped for this week.
“You go into every game believing you can win, but to get to Week 2 is awesome.”
Meanwhile, Monfils, a showman and crowd favorite, continued his recent rich style.
His victory over 27-year-old Fritz follows his victory at the ASB Classic in Auckland earlier this monthhe became the oldest winner of the ATP Tour singles title.
After delivering an ace to secure victory – his 24th of the tournament – Monfils danced in celebration before puffing out his chest and roaring into the stands.
“I firmly believe I can still do some damage,” Monfils said.
“He started off strong, but I felt like I could do well today.”
Monfils’ victory came after his wife Elina Svitolina won her third-round match against Jasmine Paolini on the same court.
“I think I warmed it up for her,” Monfils joked.
“She’s playing No. 4 in the world, so it’s going to be tough for her, but I hope she can break that record.”
Monfils will face American 21st seed Ben Shelton, who defeated Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-5).
