The Gambia’s human rights record to be examined by Universal Periodic Review – Africa.com | Global News Avenue

The United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group will review Gambia’s human rights record for the fourth time at a meeting in Geneva on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Webcast.

The Gambia is one of 14 countries to be reviewed by the Universal Periodic Review Working Group during its meeting from 20 to 31 January 2025.First, second and third universal periodic reviews The Gambia meetings were held in February 2010, October 2014 and November 2019.

The Universal Periodic Review Working Group consists of 47 member states of the Human Rights Council. However, each of the 193 UN member states can participate in country reviews.

The documents on which the review is based are: 1) National reports – information provided by the country under review; 2) Information contained in reports by independent human rights experts and groups (known as special procedures), human rights treaty bodies and other United Nations entities; 3) Information provided by other stakeholders, including national human rights institutions, regional organizations and civil society groups.

The Universal Periodic Review is a peer review of the human rights records of all 193 United Nations member states. Since the first meeting in April 2008, all 193 member states of the United Nations have undergone three reviews. During the fourth cycle of the UPR, States should once again spell out the steps they have taken to implement recommendations made during previous reviews and commit to following up on and highlighting recent human rights developments in the country.

The Gambian delegation was led by Dawda A. Jallow, Justice of the Gambia.

The three country representatives serving as rapporteurs (the “Troika”) on the Gambia review are Colombia, Kenya and Spain.

The Universal Periodic Review Working Group is scheduled to adopt the recommendations to The Gambia on Friday, 24 January 2025, from 15:30 to 18:00 (GMT+1). The State under review may wish to express its position on the recommendations made to it during the review.
