Nigeria to Expand Internet Access with LEO Satellite Partnership – Africa.com
Nigeria Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) is partnering with France’s Eutelsat to deploy Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services in Nigeria with the aim of bridging the digital divide in the country. LEO satellites operate at altitudes of 500 to 2,000 kilometers, unlike traditional geostationary satellites, which operate at higher altitudes, typically 35,786 kilometers from Earth. As a result, LEO satellites provide high-speed, low-latency internet and are ideally suited to delivering internet services to underserved communities, government operations and businesses. Jane Egerton-Idehen, Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, stressed that the collaboration is a key step in driving Nigeria’s digital transformation and strengthening ties with France in satellite technology. The collaboration will leverage Eutelsat’s LEO satellite network and further position NIGCOMSAT as a leader in satellite communications. This development is in line with Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan 2020-2025, which aims to increase broadband penetration to 70%.
