Zimbabwe’s opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has announced its support for the government’s proposal to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term until 2030. The bill is expected to be introduced in parliament soon and could lead to a referendum delaying the next election by two years. Mnangagwa’s current term, his second and final term under Zimbabwe’s constitution, ends in 2028. The extension is consistent with discussions to scrap term limits entirely at a meeting of the ruling ZANU-PF party in October. Observers, meanwhile, speculated that the opposition support was linked to MPs getting term extensions. Bribery allegations also surfaced. However, divisions emerged within the CCC, with some members denouncing the move as a betrayal. The proposal sparked widespread debate and highlighted political tensions and concerns about democratic processes in the southern African country.
