Everton 0-1 Aston Villa: David Moyes says he ‘can’t magician’ scoring issues
Moyes, who has been out of work since leaving West Ham this summer, said the move to appoint him came “very quickly” after speaking to Everton ownership group chairman Dan Friedkin and the club’s executive chairman Mark Watts .
With Watts flying in from the US to watch the game from the directors’ box, Moyes may have felt he should have spent more time thinking about the decision.
But emotions have taken over, with Moyes writing on the matchday show that “Everton Football Club means a lot to me and my family”.
Supporters were largely in favor of seeing Dyche replaced by safety Moyes, with the returning manager receiving a warm welcome as he emerged from the tunnel before kick-off.
The change in management brought hope and optimism to the Blues faithful, but they have accepted reality while working full-time.
Forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin sparked the fury of fans after his error in injury time, with a golden-edged chance from eight yards out being tackled into the Gwady Street end.
Moyes said of the mistake: “If we had gone in with the score 1-1, I don’t think many people would have said it was too far away from the goal, but it was just a clinical move, a clinical moment that allowed us to score.
“It’s not just one game tonight, it’s other games and I think everyone can see that. I can’t change that, I can’t.”
Southampton are bottom of the table and it looks like two of the four teams above them will join them in the Championship next season.
Everton and Moyes are now fighting for survival alongside Wolves and Leicester City, with all three losing on Wednesday. Ipswich complete the quartet when they face Brighton on Thursday.
Premier League champion Mark Albrighton told BBC Radio 5 Live: “It’s a tough job for David Moyes at Everton, as the previous manager at the helm of the club said. as found.”
“It’s a doable job (to save them from relegation). There are a couple of teams out there that are not as good as Everton.
“I think Moyes is the right appointment at this stage. It’s still early days in his reign but I just see them improving and growing in confidence.”
