Comoros Ruling Party Secures Landslide Parliamentary Victory – Africa.com
The ruling Congress for the Renewal of Comoros, led by President Azali Assoumani, won 28 of Comoros’ 33 parliamentary seats, maintaining Comoros’ majority. The results announced by the Electoral Commission are subject to confirmation by the Supreme Court. Sunday’s election was boycotted by some opposition parties, which had previously accused Assoumani’s party of electoral fraud. Assoumani is a former military officer who first seized power in a coup in 1999. However, he stepped down in 2006 after serving only one term. Assoumani returned to the country’s politics in 2016 after winning that year’s presidential election. He has been president ever since, with a 2018 constitutional change allowing him to bypass term limits and the previous political arrangement of rotating the presidency among the country’s three islands. The election victory strengthens his grip on power amid ongoing political tensions.
