Boko Haram must end vicious killing spree – Africa.com
Responding to the killing of more than 40 civilians in a January 12 attack by Boko Haram on farming communities in Borno state in northeast Nigeria, Amnesty International Nigeria Director Isa Sanusi said:
“Amnesty International strongly condemns the execution of these civilians, which once again demonstrates Boko Haram’s complete disregard for the sanctity of human life and the rules of international humanitarian law. Boko Haram must be held accountable for its atrocities over the years, including war crimes.
“Our findings indicate that Boko Haram rounded up farmers and fishermen, separated them and shot them at point-blank range. Those who tried to escape were hunted down and dozens more injured. The search for the bodies is ongoing. , while planning a mass burial for the victims.
“In addition to killings targeting civilians, Boko Haram continues to abduct women and girls and carry out widespread looting of property. The fact that such atrocities remain common demonstrates that more needs to be done to protect civilians and ensure reparations and justice for victims’ families.”
