Merthyr Town: FAW want Martyrs to join revamped Cymru Premier
FAW said it would also guarantee Merthyr would be paid £250,000 a year for five years for playing Cymru Premier matches, with an additional £30,000 due in the 2026-27 season due to falling attendances.
Merthyr will also receive £25,000 in 4G rollout funding and up to £40,000 to install new TV brackets.
FAW said the total value of the financial package is £5.95 million.
Attracting Merthyr to the Cymru Premier is part of the FAW league’s restructuring plan, which has previously announced that the league will expand to 16 teams and include a new end-of-season split into three tiers from the 2026-27 season.
The Welsh top flight currently consists of 12 teams. After home and away games, the league is divided into two groups of 6 teams in each group.
Whether Maisel fans will be tempted to join — regardless of the seemingly generous financial packages on offer — is another matter.
The club cherishes its unique position within the English system and is well placed for promotion to the Southland League, England’s sixth tier.
They currently sit nine points clear at the top of the Southern League after 1,744 spectators gathered at Penidaren Park for Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with AFC Totton.
Messer said they would not comment on the financial incentives offered by FAW until the matter is discussed at the club’s board meeting next week.
