Australian Open 2025 results: Naomi Osaka takes ‘little revenge’ to reach third round
Osaka, 27, gave birth to daughter Shai in July 2023 and returned to the WTA Tour six months later.
The four-time Grand Slam winner lost in the first round on her grand slam return last year at the Australian Open, before exiting in the second round at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows.
But the former world number one has made an impressive start to 2025, defeating France’s Caroline Garcia in three sets in her opening match and then defeating France’s Caroline Garcia in less than two hours No. 20 seed Muchova.
“Honestly, we gave it our all,” Osaka said of Wednesday’s comeback victory.
“I feel like I left everything I had on the court. Just to be back on these courts… it really made my whole year.”
Osaka will face Belinda Bencic in the next round, with the Canadian herself competing in a Grand Slam for the first time since giving birth to daughter Bella in April 2024.
Three straight wins will take Osaka into the fourth round of a major for the first time since winning the Australian Open in 2021.
