Remedy may be better known for Alan Wake and Control, but its April 2016 release was an entirely different experiment in pushing the boundaries of video game storytelling. Players take on the role of Jack Joyce, a man with the ability to manipulate time, trying to prevent the end of time. But the problem is, his former best friend Paul Serene stands in his way – he has super powers and an entire private army at his command.

Quantum Break combines bog-standard third-person cover shooter gameplay with the ability to manipulate time, allowing players to close distance from enemies, stop bullets, and more. Outside of combat, these abilities are used to solve puzzles and find additional story pieces, remaining a key system for anyone looking to find all that extra lore.

What sets Quantum Break apart from other video games is its TV tie-in: at the end of each act, an interactive TV episode plays before you get back to running and shooting in Joyce’s shoes, and it Varies on a case-by-case basis. The choices you make in the game. Quantum Break is a completely new concept (even predating Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch) and stars Sean Ashmore, Aidan Gillen, and the late, great Lance Electronic performances by Reddick et al.

The mixed-media release brought different critical results, but in the years after release, no other game attempted to do the same.
