Matt Bloomfield: Luton Town appoint Wycombe boss as new manager

Bloomfield said Luton’s in-depth study of him and the team he managed gave him a “feeling of being wanted” and convinced him “it was the right move at the right time”.

Although he had been Wycombe manager for less than two years, his 19 seasons at Wycombe earned him the nickname “Mr Wycombe”.

He made 558 appearances for the club and in his final season (2021-22) he was appointed first-team coach alongside his playing duties.

He helped Rangers advance from the Second Division three times and led the Rangers to the Championship for the only time in their history in the 2019-20 season.

His first managerial appointment came at Colchester United in September 2022, after leading the team out of the Second Division relegation zone with nine wins in 27 games in charge, under Gareth He was appointed Wycombe manager Wanderers in February 2023 after Ainsworth left to join Queens Park.

Last season, he led Wycombe to the English League Cup final for the first time in history. This year, he led the team to enter the league promotion competition with a 19-game unbeaten record and faced Charlton Athletic on December 29.

With Wycombe now looking for a replacement, an interim coaching team of development coaches – including Sam Grace, Harry Hudson, Matty Day and Jerome John – will oversee training and the upcoming game.
