Ayesha Curry reveals why she chose a supernatural Jamaican novel “Honeysuckle and Bone” for publishing debut

Curry launches Sweet July Books, a brand dedicated to uplifting people different voices. The first novel on the label is Honeysuckle and Bones by Trisha Tobias, which tells the story of 18-year-old Carina as she travels to the United States. jamaica A nanny for a wealthy family, only to discover dark secrets and supernatural elements in their estate.
Tobias joined Curry on “CBS Morning Show” to share the inspiration behind her debut novel.
“I really just want to share a message with readers, especially younger readers, that no matter how big of a mistake you think you’ve made, as long as you’re willing to admit it and make it, there’s always a better option in the future, there’s always another The road is not the end for you,” Tobias said.
The novel combines elements of mystery, coming of age, betrayal, love and Jamaican culture.
Curry, who has strong ties to Jamaica, said the book attracted her because of its cultural depth. She also said the book is a blend of mystery, ghosts and Karina’s journey of coming of age. Curry’s own Jamaican heritage played an important role in her decision to publish the novel.
“The first one is obviously Trisha is an incredible writer, but we have a lot of connections. The first obvious connection is our Jamaican roots,” said the man, who is married to Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry Curry said. “The story is set in Jamaica. That culture permeates the entire page. So that really appealed to us about the story.”
Incorporations of Jamaican culture, including food references such as cocoa bread and Jamaican beef patties, add authenticity to the story, something Tobias attributes to her mother, who grew up in Jamaica.
“My mother, who was born and raised in Jamaica, was a huge inspiration and she told me all kinds of Duppy stories growing up,” Tobias shared.
The novel explores themes of self-discovery, growing up, and navigating complex relationships, while delves into the supernatural elements that influence Karina’s life.
Tobias mentioned the twists and turns in the story, saying, “When you write and revise, a lot of magical things happen. To me, it’s a little bit surprising, even to myself. “
Curry hopes Honeysuckle and Bones will help foster a love of reading in young people, especially those who are drawn to deep, meaningful stories.
In addition to his ever-expanding business empire, Curry also discussed the changes that come with having four children, ages 8 months to 12 years old.
“I think when people say, ‘Oh, after three o’clock, it doesn’t make much of a difference,’ they’re filled with that kind of thinking.”
Honeysuckle and Bones, the first book from Sweet July Books, is now available at booksellers nationwide.
