Ange Postecoglou: Tamworth abuse was ‘vile and detestable’
Tottenham Hotspur manager Angie Postkoglu has said the abuse directed at him by a minority of Tamworth fans was “vile and abhorrent”.
The Australian was the target of chants from the home fans during Tottenham’s 3-0 FA Cup third round win over the non-league side on Sunday.
A sell-out crowd of 3,270 at the Lamb Ground watched Tamworth hold off the Premier League side during normal time, only to concede three goals in extra time.
While the majority of fans enjoy the game in the right spirit, Postkoglu said it’s “unacceptable” that a minority don’t.
“Ninety percent of people are very nice and like to joke around. There are 10 percent that are very difficult to accept,” Postecoglou said.
“The stuff I heard was pretty vile and disgusting and I had things thrown at me, which was not a good experience but we should be greater people.
“I would love to turn around and not be a greater person in that moment, but you deal with it and move on.”
Fifth tier Tamworth are 96 places below Tottenham in the football pyramid.
But the non-league side held their ground during normal game time, forcing Spurs to endure several huge scares.
“Credit to Andy (Tamworth coach Pickles) and his players and the people at Tamworth Football Club,” Postkoglu added.
“I think they did themselves proud the way they carried themselves that day.”
BBC Sport has contacted Tamworth and the EFL for comment.
