This Smart Home Pod Promises Powerful New Tricks to Stop Porch Pirates

Hyve’s original take on a centuries-old solution
I noticed that this new locker has several interesting add-ons, including:
- Carbon fiber tether to secure the box. Delivery lock boxes aren’t easily moved, but if you’re worried about thieves snatching the entire box, you can use this quarter-inch cable to tie it to a post or railing for safekeeping.
- If the box is tampered with, the accelerometer will sound an alarm. Tamper warnings also send you phone alerts so you know when someone is trying to gain access without authorization.
- An app for “unlocking” delivery boxes or sending special unlock codes to delivery services, family, friends and others. Owners can get alert updates when using the code. The app can also connect to some existing smart home security systems, but details are unclear at this time.
- There is a small window on the top of the pod so that the delivery person can take photos to confirm the delivery, which meets the requirements of the owner and the delivery company (this feature is particularly common sense, I have not seen other boxes with this feature).
- Compatible with returns package pickup software.

These additions make Hyve unique among delivery boxes, but Hyve Security also wants to achieve more ambitious goals. The pod is designed to encourage retailers to spend less on external packaging. For example, if everyone had a delivery box, companies could theoretically reduce the use of packaging materials used to protect against weather or theft, thus protecting the environment and lowering the carbon footprint of packaging.
It’s a lofty goal, but it’s indicative of Hyve Security’s original intentions. The company was founded by Melissa Kieling (founder of frozen meal bag company Packit) and her son to solve this specific household problem. If you want to pick up your order, you don’t have to wait too long: starting in June 2025, buyers can purchase a Hyve delivery box for $300.
