Australian Open 2025 results: Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek dedicate first-round wins to LA firefighters
Coco Gauff dedicated her Australian Open first-round victory to Los Angeles and the firefighters who have been battling the devastating wildfires.
American third seed Gauff, one of the favorites to win the title in Melbourne, defeated compatriot and 2020 champion Sofia Kenin 6-3 6-3.
After Gauff won, she wrote on the camera, “LA stands strong, thank you firefighters.”
She and Taylor Fritz have previously donated to charities to help those affected.
World No. 2 Iga Swiatek also signed the shot: “Sending my love to Malibu and Los Angeles.”
The Pole started her Australian Open campaign with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Czech Katarina Siniakova.
The fire that started on January 7 was labeled The most devastating in the city’s history.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said Sunday 24 people have died At least 16 people were missing in the fire.
American Pam Shriver’s coach, Donna Vekic, also sent a message to the city after Sunday’s first-round win.
Shriver stayed in Los Angeles to help his family.
