Sainsbury’s to raise pay to £12.60 an hour

Sainsbury’s department store has announced it will increase hourly wages to combat “particularly severe cost inflation” after the retailer warned that prices could rise later this year.

The supermarket chain said wages will rise by 5% by August, from £12 an hour to £12.60 an hour.

UK inflation is rising at its fastest pace since March, driven by fuel and clothing, latest official data shows.

But the British Retail Consortium lobby group Warning: ‘There’s little hope for prices other than going up’ in stores Retailers manage measures announced in the Autumn Budget, including an increase in employer national insurance.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said at the time that she had “decided the right thing to do is to ask businesses and the richest people in our country to pay a little more”.

In a trading update for the crucial Christmas period, Sainsbury’s said it expected full-year profits to rise by about 7% to more than £1 billion.

During the holiday period, comparable sales increased 2.8%, driven by food.
