Mozambique Opposition Leader Returns After Months in Exile – Africa.com
Mozambique’s main opposition leader Venancio Mondlane returned from exile on Thursday, sparking clashes between his supporters and security forces at Maputo Mavarane International Airport. Mondlane fled the country in October after a disputed election was marred by accusations of rigging and violence, including the assassination of two senior opposition members. Security forces fired tear gas at hundreds of supporters who had gathered near the airport to greet him, police blocked surrounding roads and a helicopter circled overhead. More than 100 protesters have been killed by security forces since the disputed October 9 election that declared victory for the long-ruling Frelimo party. Despite protests, the Constitutional Council upheld Frelimo’s victory and President-elect Daniel Chapo will succeed Filipe Nyusi next week.
