This isn’t your typical car HUD: Check out Hyundai Mobis’ holographic windshield display
CNET’s Bridget Carey shows off Hyundai Mobis’ new holographic window display at CES 2025
One of the biggest problems with having a bunch of screens in your car is that it distracts you when you’re trying to drive. Well, I’m trying out a Hyundai Mobis concept car that puts everything on the windshield with a new technology. This is not your typical HUD. It uses a projector to show me information, which the passenger cannot see, and I cannot see what the passenger sees. So at CES, this little demo. I kind of showed how I saw my MPH hovering in front of me. If I turn my head, it disappears. It’s kind of like some weird little magic effect because what it’s doing is projecting an image onto a special piece of film that’s unique in that it controls the light in a different way than other things. For example, if you’re driving in the sun and it’s very bright, you won’t be affected. I can’t test this here, but that’s how they explain it. Technology for me. Okay, now I get it, you know how fast I’m going and what the speed limit is. I’m out there looking for direction and I can tell you what music I’m listening to. I could put more in if I wanted to. I can put in the weather, but if I’m changing lanes, then it starts giving me other mirrors. Oh, look, right there, I can see, oh, who’s to my left, what’s to my right, and if you want to navigate, I can get different views from the cameras around the car. You can also use the service to make predictions, so you never take your eyes off the road if you want some kind of mapping system to let you know where you’re going during a trip. It’s all kind of overlaid on top of everything else. I didn’t really change my focus that much. I mean, in this example, I’m looking at a TV screen and obviously I’m not actually driving, but I’m looking forward and just moving my eyes down a little bit, I’m not looking around like crazy at the car or Roll my eyes. head. Too much to see where I’m going, so there are some interesting safety features here. I’m not a big fan of too many screens in the car. I think they are distracting. So this is a step in a good direction. Interestingly, passengers couldn’t see my speed. You were once a passenger and you wanted to visually see what the driver was doing, but you can’t do that in this concept because there’s nothing on the dashboard. It’s all just mine. Here’s a little secret. So while I’m focusing on the road, passengers can do things like watch movies, play games. We saw an example of someone playing a game through an app connection on their phone so they could do whatever they wanted, but I’ll never know. With the SOIS concept, they can take the technology to another level in other ways. Let’s say I feel like I’m a little stressed, or someone falls asleep on the road. Well, they have other types of technology that can capture your brain waves and say, hey, maybe if I’m a little stressed or a little sleepy, this monitor might tell me something to help me wake up, or they can even adjust Lights, seat vibrations and heat, or music to help me focus more or reduce stress on the road. Another thing you might not be able to tell from watching it at home is this. The projected screen transparency is as high as 95%. You know, I don’t have to wear it all the time, but I can still totally see through it. I’m watching from the side of the road now. I see a crosswalk. I see the dotted line. It doesn’t take up everything like a computer screen. I know it’s just a concept, but as someone who wouldn’t buy a car with a screen, you know what? I can dig this. Let me know what you think. Thank you for watching.
