It’s hard not to like artificially intelligent home robots when they’re cute babies. CNET’s Bridget Carey discusses TCL’s latest smart home concept, an artificially intelligent child companion robot called Ai Me (“Aime”).
Look, if we’re going to have robots in our homes, why not make them cute little robots that drive around and you can hug them. This is Amy, a concept of TCL. It is a companion robot designed for children at home to chat and play, and it is also integrated into all smart home products that TCL already has. So it’s kind of like a smart home control center. I’m seeing more and more little robot companions designed for kids that use artificial intelligence. For example, we’ve seen things like Moxie where you can have conversations back and forth, but in TCL’s concept it could also be leveraged like your smart security system. It understands what’s going on inside the car. It knows the temperature in your home. You know, if you’re not home, maybe you want to drive it around and have it be another pair of eyes in the house. What do you take out of this carriage? It blinks its eyes, moves its arms, and uses its camera to communicate with you in some way. Every year at CES, I see a lot of robots rolling around in your house. They were usually concepts, but no concept had ever had a costume before. Yes, you can dress Amy up. We have a green model, maybe a model of the universe, dressed up like a penguin. Why don’t you dress your robot up like a penguin? We need more of this in the world because it brings joy, right? Anyway, the point is because this is for kids, they’ll want to play with it. With it, it also gives it its own little personality.
