Prosiect Cymru: Newport County’s Huw Jenkins backs plan for EFL clubs to enter Welsh cup
Newport County chairman Hugh Jenkins has backed plans to give Welsh EFL clubs the chance to compete for European qualification through the Welsh Cup.
But Jenkins said the proposal, known as Prosiect Cymru (Plan for Wales), can only move forward if it wins the support of England’s football authorities.
As clubs in the English pyramid, Newport, Cardiff City, Swansea and Wrexham can currently only qualify for European competitions through the Premier League, FA Cup or League Cup.
But talks are still ongoing for the quartet to compete in the Welsh League Cup, currently known as the Nathaniel MG Cup, for a chance to represent Wales in the UEFA Cup.
The plan has been submitted to the Football Association (FA), UEFA, Premier League and Cyprus Premier League clubs, with Jenkins stressing that all parties must be happy.
“We can’t lose sight of the fact that we are affiliated with the EFL. Like all clubs we have been affiliated for many, many years,” he told BBC Radio Wales’ breakfast program.
