Firefighters in Los Angeles are battling multiple blazes on the city’s outskirts, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee.
Santa Ana winds and bone-dry conditions exacerbated the rapidly changing conditions. Authorities currently say it is impossible to control the fire.
The Palisades Fire, the closest and largest blaze to the coast, has ripped through the picturesque suburb, home to many Hollywood stars. More than 1,000 buildings have been destroyed.
Here’s how the fires are spreading and affecting the Los Angeles area.
Current fire overview
Currently, four major fires are being extinguished.
this fence The fire was first reported at 10:30am (18:30GMT) on Tuesday, growing from 20 acres to more than 200 acres in just 20 minutes, before growing more than tenfold in a matter of hours. So far, at least 30,000 people have been ordered to leave their homes.
this Eaton The fire grew to 1,000 acres within the first six hours of breaking out. The outbreak began in Altadena, a hill above Pasadena, around 18:30 local time on Tuesday.
this hearst The fire is located north of San Fernando. According to local officials, the fire started burning around 22:10 local time on Tuesday and the burning area has expanded to 500 acres. It has triggered evacuation orders in neighboring Santa Clarita.
The latest of the four fires is woodley The fire is currently at 75 acres. It erupted around 06:15 local time on Wednesday.
How did the Palisades Fire spread?
The Palisades Fire has burned more than 2,900 acres so far. The map above shows how quickly the fire spread and intensified over the course of several hours. Just after 14:00 on Tuesday, it covers 772 acres and was expanded to its current size in four hours.
More than 1,400 firefighters tried to put out the blaze, and thousands were forced to evacuate.
How does the scale of the Palisade fire compare to New York and London?
To get a sense of the scale of the Palisades fire, we overlaid it on maps of New York and London.
As you can see, it’s about the same size as the central district of the British capital or large swathes of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Another indication of the scale of the Palisades fire comes from NASA’s Earth Observatory.
Images taken on Tuesday showed a huge plume of smoke rising from California and drifting out to sea.
Impact of Eaton Fire
The Palisade Fire isn’t the only fire to have a devastating impact on Los Angeles communities.
The photo above shows the Jewish Temple in Pasadena before and during the Eaton Fire.
The Jewish Temple and Center’s website says it has been in use since 1941 and has a congregation of more than 400 families.
