Eric Chelle: Nigeria appoint former Mali boss as new Super Eagles coach

Nigeria has appointed former Mali head coach Eric Scherer as the new head coach of the Nigeria men’s national team.

Augustine Eguavoen served as interim head coach during his time with the Super Eagles. Successful qualifying round 2025 African Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Former Mali international Scherer coached the Eagles for more than two years, but the 47-year-old was sacked in June last year.

Last year, the West African side reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations but were eliminated by eventual champions Ivory Coast after extra time.

Nigeria finished runners-up under Jose Pesero Leaving coaching position after contract ends Shortly after the game.

A statement from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said that Chele’s mission is to “lead the Super Eagles to a ticket to the 2026 World Cup finals.”

The three-time continental champions made a winless start to World Cup qualifying, drawing three of their first four games in Group C.

The Super Eagles, four points behind group leaders Rwanda, travel to Kigali to face Wasps before hosting bottom side Zimbabwe in the next round in March.

Only the group winners qualify for the finals in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The NFF has not revealed the length of Chelle’s contract.
