Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)

The Sixth Retreat of the Network of All Legal Advisers to ECOWAS Agencies, Agencies and Offices was organized by the Legal Affairs Bureau of the ECOWAS Commission and took place from 17 to 21 December 2024 in Banjul, The Gambia.

The retreat began with a brief opening session hosted by Ag. Ms. Isatou Combeh NJAI, Director of Legal Affairs. In her opening remarks, Ms. NJAI welcomed all participants to The Gambia and thanked members for their commitment to the network.

Participants in the Legal Advisor Network include representatives of the ECOWAS Commission, the ECOWAS Parliament and the West African Health Organization (WAHO).

Recall that the Network of Legal Advisors to ECOWAS Agencies, Agencies and Offices is an initiative of the Legal Affairs Bureau of the ECOWAS Commission and provides a platform for legal cooperation and professional exchange.

The network hosts two annual retreats, one before the mid-year statutory meeting and the second before the end-of-year statutory meeting, with the purpose of:

  • Draft, review and adapt texts in three languages ​​for consideration by the ECOWAS statutory meeting to ensure compliance with Community and international instruments provisions/requirements.
  • Develop a model for the execution of management directives to centralize the preparation of all contracts for the community in committees.
  • Explore possible ways to coordinate and unify cyber counsel activities.
  • Discussions create more opportunities for interaction between network members.
