Samsung’s Micro LED Smartwatch Concept Is the Brightest Screen I’ve Seen on a Watch

Does anyone need a screen? That Is it bright on your wrist? That’s what I thought when I saw Samsung Display’s micro LED smartwatch concept. CES 2025. I wasn’t allowed to touch or interact with the watch concept, but I didn’t have to in order to understand why it was special. Even from a distance, I could see that the screen was incredibly bright compared to a standard smartwatch, making the glowing Las Vegas sphere and street lights displayed on the watch’s display really pop.

Samsung and other companies already use the technology in their products televisionbut this technology has not yet been implemented wearable devices. However, it was reported that Apple had been developing a micro LED display for the Apple Watch but later abandoned the move. Bloomberg.

The watch I saw at the Samsung Display booth was just a concept, so I don’t know if it will actually appear in future products. Samsung Display and Samsung Electronics are separate entities; the former is a display supplier and the latter is a consumer technology company. Therefore, just because Samsung Display develops a new display technology does not necessarily mean they will launch new products, as mass production of many advanced display types is often costly.

Back to the brightness of this Samsung Display Concept Watch.

A placard near the watch says its maximum brightness is less than 4,000 nits, compared with 3,000 nits for the Apple Watch Ultra 2’s screen and 2,000 nits for the Pixel Watch 3’s screen. However, it’s so bright that some parts of the image look a little washed out.

Samsung Display isn’t the only company exploring Micro LED wearables. Taiwanese display manufacturer AU Optronics has also mentioned Micro LED screens for wearable devices in its products website.

There’s also the question of why such a bright display would be useful on the wrist, if at all. If Samsung integrates this technology into the future galaxy watch – This is a big assumption – I could see how it would make sense for a Pro or Ultra model designed for outdoor use. The bright screen is easy to see in direct sunlight and also allows the watch to act as a better flashlight in dark environments. Beyond that, there may be more surprising or useful uses.

I also wonder if this brightness will drain the battery faster, and how dark the ultra-bright watch face will become, especially if you wear it while sleeping.

While we don’t yet know if a Micro LED smartwatch is imminent, Samsung Display’s concept gives us a glimpse of what’s possible from a technical perspective. It may be a hint of what we might see as the technology becomes cheaper and easier to produce at scale.

If Samsung’s smartwatch concept is any indication of what’s to come, the future of smartwatches is very bright indeed.
