The race to succeed Akinwumi Adesina as President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in 2025 is intensifying with eight candidates vying for the position. Adesina, who has led the bank since 2015 and was re-elected in 2020, will complete his term in May 2025. The main contenders include Chad’s Abbas Mohamed Tolé, Algeria’s Rabah Arezki, Senegal’s Amadou Hote and Zambia’s Samuel Muzele Maimbo. Other candidates include Cameroon’s Albert Zefak, South Africa’s Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala, Benin’s Romuald Wadani and Mauritania’s Ousmane Kane. Each candidate has the backing of influential regional groups and their national governments, reflecting the bank’s complex voting dynamics. Elections, scheduled for May 29, 2025 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, will determine the future of the 82-member body, which is tasked with driving sustainable development across Africa.
